CSA Week 14
Sounds like many of you got the Purple Peruvian fingerling potatoes last week! The first few days may have gotten something different, so you may see them this week. This week looks like: celeriac, kale, apples (Macoun), peaches, butternut winter squash, onions, tomatoes (may need to let them sit out for a day or two) maybe a kohlrabi and or daikon radish. Pretty sure arugula is happening for folks starting Saturday. I thought butternut were going into bags last week, but it turns out the guys had started off with the spaghetti squash…so if you got a oval yellow thingy and were not sure what it was, now you know!
Whaaat? Peaches still?
If this is your first time with celeriac, peel the beastly looking root and cube or matchstick and add to roasted veggie medley, stir-fry, soup, if thinly sliced it’s nice raw too. I like to boil it with potatoes and mash as a celery potato fusion.
For those who were asking…This is week 14 for everyone except for Sunday peeps. The last pick ups of the regular CSA season are:
Friday, your last day will be October 1.
Saturday, your last day will be October 2.
Sunday, your last day will be October 10.
Monday, your last day will be October 4.
Tuesday, your last day will be October 4.
Wednesday, your last day will be October 6.
Thursday, your last day will be October 7.
Recipes
There are several different Asian greens that will be appearing anytime, all of them are amenable to cooking very quickly or shredded for salads.
Quick Stir Fry Chinese Cabbage
- 2 TB oil (not olive)
- 1+ tsp minced ginger (optional)
- 2 cloves minced garlic (optional)
- few pinches red pepper flakes
- Shredded cabbage
- other veggies if you have on hand (shredded carrot, radish, turnip, kohlrabi, thinly sliced onion or pepper)
- 3+ Tb soy sauce
- sprinkle rice vinegar
This is so simple to throw together! The cabbage is featured, but any other veggies you have laying about are supporting characters! Shred or slice very thinly everything. Heat oil in large skillet (by all means use your wok if you’ve got one!), add onion, ginger, red pepper flakes, stir around a minute, add cabbage, garlic and any other veggies. Stir around until wilted. Remove from heat, drizzle with soy sauce and rice vinegar, cover and let rest 2 minutes and enjoy!
My full complete “recipe”: Cook 1lb ground sausage; when browned, add oil if needed and continue with above recipe. Usually I serve with rice

Farm Dirt
Such a busy week! Lots of planning going on here and finally a bunch of the crops we planted specifically for CSA are coming in. We’ve had lots and lots of awesomness for the bags, BUT, we always plan on some fun, special things just for you like the celeriac and kohlrabi 🙂 Also, sizing up now are a variety of greens like Ethiopian Kale, Beka Santoh, Chirimen Hakusai, and some others that escape me. Glenn placed the potato order for next year, can you believe that? e have to get that done early to ensure we can get the different things like Pinto, Purple Peru, French Fingerling, etc. Yes, they are all potatoes, but they really do have different flavor and texture profiles. That reminds me, be sure to store you taters in the dark, and not in a plastic bag that will keep too much moisture on them. These are hyper fresh and hand dug, they have not been “cured” so the moisture content is very high and they cook very fast. They are just extra amazing when they are so new!
“Po-tay-toes! Boil em, mash em, stick em in a stew. Lovely big golden chips with a nice piece of fried fish…Even you couldn’t say no to that.”
Yeppers, it is still raining a lot around these here parts. We are getting by though. Seems like everyone we know has buried a truck in the past week and that makes it an absolute necessity to have a large tractor to rescue the day. One adjustment we made tis past week was to harvest the tomatoes not ripe, the way we always do. With all the precipitation, the ripening tomatoes split and crack and spoil just when we want to be harvesting them. So, we are now picking them “greener” which means they may need a day or two on your counter to ripen up. The flavor is still amazing, so it is all good.
Glenn watched as the Marsh Hawk harried the blueberry field…time for all little creatures to hide! They are truly beautiful birds, though lethal.
Eat well,
