CSA Week 13

This week you MAY have apples, tomatoes, onion, broccoli, cukes, lettuce or mesclun, peppers, hot peppers, kale, radishes? winter squash? leeks?

In the apples, look for Paula Reds, Molly Delicious, Cortland and Redcorts! Molly Delicious aka Sheep’s Nose have an unusual tapering blossom end that resembles the nose of a sheep and they have a wonderful, firm but crispy yellowish flesh.

As we approach Fall, we will see a lot of the cole crops like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, the kales and collards, also leeks, potatoes and eventually winter squash. Our winter squash is a little later than usual because the plants only produce male flowers when it is really hot, which it was during the early set. We are rally only talking about a week or ten days later than last year.

Busy Farmwife Anyslaw Dressing

Simple, simple, simple:
To 1/3 cup cider vinegar add 1/2 tsp kosher salt (sea salt would be good too), slowly whisk in 2/3 cup oil (something light, I use canola or safflower), and then add 1/2 tsp celery seed.

Yep, that’s it. I used this general recipe for any slaw, including the much coveted kohlrabi slaw. You can always add more salt to taste, and I often do. I have even substituted my Father’s favorite ‘No Salt’ when making this dressing with no ill effect. IF you like things tarter, add more vinegar… everyone knows I cook with the force, so the fact that I have written down a recipe with actual measurements is a huge achievement. And, yes, this is awesome with pulled pork or beef.

Farm Dirt

Busy first week back to school, but Reid and Faith have managed to find time in their crazy school schedules to set up at the Hardwick Farmer’s market  – when it’s your tuition money you are working for, you find the motivation! I was a little crazy nyself, and quite behind my time writing the week’s letter. I DID actually get the salsa made with Glenn’s favorite Jetstar tomatoes out of the greenhouse. He is happy! I got a little sidetracked with the extra “help” from the new kitten. I’ll post a video here and hopefully it does not brake anyone’s computer 😉

Who is up for a day at the farm picking up winter squash or potatoes? It would likely be a weekday and would entail picking up the harvest and filling bins. Give me feedback if this is of interest and I will start a list.

Eat well,
